but where is downtown in comparison to the MGM on the strip? And is cabbing the only way to get there?
Risking sound stupid...
You could take the bus (called the Deuce). It%26#39;d be less expensive, but would take longer.
Downtown is a few miles away. You can check it out on mapquest.
Risking sound stupid...
technically you could walk, but you wouldn%26#39;t see anything worth of any interest and i believe its around a 4-5 mile walk (correct me if i%26#39;m wrong anyone)
you could also take the deuce as it will take you there as well... hope this helps
Not even stupid:

Downtown map link at top of strip map
Here is a map to the strip notice where MGM Grand is,,,,on the site is a d/t map downtown being past the Stratsphere that way.http://www.vegas.com/lounge/map.html You could cab it or take ';The Duece'; bus souble decker bus that runs constantly from the strip to downtown and back i think it comes every 7 minutes, The Duece now costs 3 dollars one way or 7 for all day, a 3 day pass is $15 and if you have no car its a good method you can get on and off all day and night and it goes everywhere, the downfall of it is at times it gets packed and the wait is longer as well as the ride.
Yes, the Deuce can take you downtown as well. I have taken it from DT to Mandalay Bay before, and that took almost 45 minutes in the late afternoon. I would definitely cab it.
your pushing twenty bucks easy, you can do the deuece or one thing i do is get a shuttle to samstown and then smastown has a shuttle that goes downtown. I think tropicana may still have a sams shuttle stop and that is right across from you. Its a longer but cheaper route. Or you can take the monorail down to sahara and cab from there i think you%26#39;ll cut the cab cost in half.
We have and will again this trip, be taking the Duece from MGM to DT. We usually catch it late morning, and it takes no longer than 20-25 minutes.
The MGM stop is an early stop for the Duece, so go to the top and get seats at the front of the bus, makes for a great sight seeing tour. You get to see the entire strip and get many great pitures.
Get a 24 hour pass($7) and use your savings for some cheap drinks and gambling DT.
Cheers,
O thanks everyone!!!
...I also realized that I meant to write ';Risking sounding stupid'; but instead wrote ';Risking SOUND stupid';
...LOL!
If you are refering to the freemont street area its a couple miles north east on LV blvd from MGM. Not exactly sure on distance, try google maps. I know its at least a $20 bill for the cab ride. You can take the bus all day for like $5 a person. We took the bus downtown in the evening, but when it got to be 11:30 at night there were seriously about 200 people waiting on the last bus back to the strip. We ended up splitting a cab w/ another nice couple out of the crowd.
The Sams Town Shuttle will take a long time as its about 8 miles to the East before then heading North. Don%26#39;t walk. Once you are beyond the stratosphere which is the northern end of the strip, you have about 2 miles through a rather bleak and dingy neighbourhood. As advised already, get the deuce (CAT) or a taxi if there are 2 or 3 of you.
