Do it in advance. That way you can plan your trip better and you can know the itinerary better as well. Likely to be cheaper too. I used www.grandcanyontourcompany.com for my first South Rim visit in 2007 and took a bus/heli tour thru them. Good times, great memories. Do keep in mind that these tours last up to 15 hours and stops a bit.Good luck
